ILPI authored the report from an expert workshop held in Helsinki in September 2015. This constituted the second part of the Nordic pledge made to the 31st International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in 2011, committing to furthering the discussion on the protection of the environment in times of armed conflict.
The Helsinki Workshop brought together representatives of the Nordic governments, National Red Cross Societies of the Nordic countries, as well as other experts. The topic for discussion was the empirical and legal challenges relating to the protection of the environment in relation to armed conflicts. The report includes a number of conclusions and recommendations on how the protection of the environment could be enhanced.
