Status of forces agreement for Norwegian soldiers in Iraq

In an interview with the Norwegian newspaper Klassekampen on 12 December 2014, Hellestveit explained why a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) is necessary before dispatching Norwegian soldiers to Iraq.

SOFA agreements are politically sensitive in Iraq on account of the broad immunity granted to private military contractors by the US occupation authorities in 2003. However, sending military personnel to Iraq without a UN Mandate and with no SOFA would be unwise, and potentially expose the soldiers to various risks.

The interview is available in Norwegian here.
