Girmachew Alemu Aneme is a leading legal scholar from Ethiopia. He received his Ph.D. and MA in Law from the University of Oslo and his Bachelor of Laws from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. Aneme has been named Fulbright Humphrey Fellow for 2012/13 at the University of Minnesota Law School. He was also a visiting scholar at the Refugee Studies Centre of the University of Oxford in the summer of 2003. Aneme has served as a lecturer and Assistant Professor teaching at the undergraduate and graduate programs at the School of Law of Addis Ababa University for twelve years.
From 2010 up to 2012, Aneme has served as the head of the Centre for Human Rights at Addis Ababa University where he worked with numerous international and local organisations including the American Bar Association, the USAID, Save the Children Norway, the Canadian International Development Agency, the Australia Aid, the DFID and the Austria Development Agency.
Aneme has served for four years as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ethiopian Law, the leading peer-reviewed legal studies journal in the country published since 1965 by the School of Law at Addis Ababa University. Aneme has conducted research and published on the African Union, Legal Pluralism, Human Rights and Transitional Justice. Aneme has joined ILPI as Senior Legal Advisor and Research Professor as of December 2013.
Girmachew Alemu Aneme is attached to the ILPI Centre for African Studies and will be working from the ILPI Office in Addis Ababa.
