Marit Tolo Østebø

Marit Tolo Østebø holds a Bachelor degree in nursing, a M.phil degree in International/Public Health (2007) and a PhD in Gender and Development (2013) from the University of Bergen. She is currently a lecturer at the Department of Anthropology and an affiliate of Center for African Studies at the University of Florida (UF). Østebø’s research interests include gender equality and women’s rights, global health, gender based violence, religion and development, anthropology of development policy and practice, and human rights and culture.

Østebø has extensive field-research experience from Ethiopia where she also has been involved in humanitarian and development work. Her publication record includes articles that explores different translations of the concept “gender equality”, the relationship between religion, gender and development, and legal pluralism and women’s rights in Ethiopia.
